Concrete ADA

Concrete ADA, concrete repair Houston, LDC Paving The Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in 1990 to help prevent discrimination against those with disabilities. Part of preventing discrimination was ensuring that people with mobility issues have equal access to most buildings that are visited by or that rent to the public. Most hotels, apartment complexes, restaurants, grocery stores, shopping malls, retailers and sports complexes must comply with the provisions of the ADA, and the law applies to virtually all public buildings as well.

Concrete ADA – Regulations for ADA Concrete Ramps

Navigating the world of ADA regulations for concrete ramps can cause confusion. ADA guidelines are very specific about the different properties that ramps must have if they are to be approved access points for people using electric scooters or wheelchairs. For example, the ADA details the minimum width that the ramp must be and the amount that the elevation can increase for every foot of ramp length. ADA guidelines also cover handrails, side curbs and the location and size of landings.

Building access is not the only use of ramps required to make your property ADA-compliant in Houston. If you have walkways, you need ramps to allow access from the street or parking lot to your walkway without the obstacle of a curb. Curb ramps are also commonly found at intersections and traffic islands on both public and private properties.

Other ADA Regulations

Although ADA compliance often begins with ramps, there are other requirements you need to consider. The ADA specifies the number, size and location of handicapped parking spaces as well as the signage required. Handicapped spaces must have at least one buffer zone in which parking is not permitted, and if necessary, ramps may need to be installed adjacent to the parking space.

Always Choose an Experienced Contractor

Whether you are retrofitting an existing building or planning a new one, you should always choose a contractor with experience in all of the regulations contained in the ADA. He should also be aware of any local codes that exceed the requirements of the ADA. Mistakes can be costly; there have been cases of property owners having to demolish and rebuild an access ramp because it was undersized by just a few inches or was too long to not provide a landing.
